When you need to ship a car or other vehicle from your home to a new destination, or from a seller who is across the country to your home, you'll likely do it through a company offering auto transport services.

If you do require car transport service, there are a few things you should consider when shopping around for the best price and most reliable company.

First, remember that almost no company will offer guaranteed pick-up and delivery dates. There are just too many variables, including weather, carrier breakdowns, unexpected traffic, and availability of the auto transport service that you specifically ask for.

If you find that rare company that will give you guaranteed dates, make sure there is a clause in the contract, that defines clearly what compensation they will offer for missing the timeframe they have given you. For instance, late delivery doesn't cost a car transport service anything, but may incur the expense of a rental vehicle for you. Check to see if such events are covered. If the vehicle is not picked up on time, you may be able to negotiate a clause that will exempt you from a cancellation fee.

Most auto transport services will require some kind of deposit up front, and the balance on delivery. Depending on the company, you may also incur a surcharge if using a credit card. However you are paying for their auto transport services, be sure to go over the original inspection report that was filled out at the time of pick-up, and make sure there have been no damages to the vehicle, before handing over the payment. In the event there are damages, they should be noted on the report, and any adjustments to the bill can be taken up with the company.
